JustAid was founded by Jodie Hawkey in 2001. The idea for JustAid came from Jodie’s first hand experiences working in development where she had seen time and again that it was local people who best understood the needs of their own communities. She realised the importance of choice: both for the communities in need as well as for the donors wishing to help.
Jodie wanted to ensure that JustAid provided donors with evidence of how their support directly helped - an often overlooked area. Allowing donors to support identifiable, finite projects where they receive a report and photo once the project is completed achieves this aim.
Jodie also felt that JustAid could effectively address issues of accountability and transparency. For this reason, it was decided to make a clear distinction between funds donated for projects, where 100% actually goes to projects, and the running costs of JustAid, which are sponsored independently. By making this commitment, JustAid is able to account not only for every penny donated, but also for every decision made. This in turn leads to the highest levels of transparency.
JustAid was founded in order to encompass each of these ideas into a development organisation committed to helping in the most positive way. JustAid now has a board of eleven trustees, all of whom are committed to the aims and values of JustAid. To read more about the people behind JustAid, please go to About JustAid > Who We Are.
