Construction of flower garden/community meeting area Ref: 147.00 Where is this project needed? Centre Region, Chitwan, Nepal Who needs help with this? Jeskelo Youth Club Ujjawal Nager, Chitwan How will my support help? The families who are living in this community are all Tharus, which is an ethnic group of people in Nepal. This is one of the most disadvantaged groups in Nepalese culture who, in the past, were often made to work as bonded labourers. As such, they have little or no financial independence. In 2000, the law in Nepal changed, stating that all bonded labourers must be released and so they are now 'free'. However, on having to leave their employers, these families also had to leave their homes and so were left jobless and homeless. These particular families in Chitwan have been assigned a small strip of land to live on, but this is insufficient for them to make a living from. Having recently received support from JustAid with the construction of deep-water wells and community toilet blocks, this has produced much encouragement amongst the community. They have proposed a scheme to help improve their environment further by creating an outdoor meeting area, comprising of a flower garden and a seating area. This project has the added benefit of ensuring the area surrounding the well is maintained and kept clean. The meeting area will be used to run community health and sanitation classes twice a month. This stretch of land is several kilometres long and over time, the community hope to create these meeting places around the water-wells, positioned every half kilometre. The villagers have offered to contribute materials and labour towards the project, but now need the finances to complete their project. Your support will enable this community to create one communal meeting area/flower garden, helping to improve the living environment for all of the families in the surrounding area. Cost Breakdown All items are bought in Nepal; to reduce costs and to support the local economy. All costs are therefore given in Nepalese Rupees.
