Construction of smokeless stoves for low income families Ref: 86.01 Where is this project needed? Baglung, Nepal Who needs help with this? Marginalised families living in Baglung district How will my support help? This project is part of a larger programme that will carry out health awareness and training for 10 families in this area. These families are from one of the most disadvantaged ethnic groups in Nepal. They have received little education and have limited awareness about health and environmental issues and they face many health problems as a direct result of their living conditions. Currently, these families are using firewood collected locally to cook in their kitchen. The smoke generated from the stoves causes many health problems, particularly respiratory infections such as bronchitis. This mainly affects women and children as they spend more time in the smoke filled houses. The large amounts of firewood collected every day are also having a detrimental impact on the local environment. Your support with this project will provide the materials needed for one family to construct a smokeless stove. These stoves are more efficient and so need less fuel meaning that the family will use a third less firewood. The stoves also incorporate a chimney system that directs smoke out of the house, which will significantly reduce the risk of respiratory problems. The project will also include training for the family on health and environmental issues. Cost Breakdown All items are bought in Nepal; to reduce costs and to support the local economy. All costs are therefore given in Nepalese Rupees. JustAid is currently using an exchange rate of £1 = 120 Nepalese Rupees. This rate is slightly lower than the Banks because it allows for fluctuation in the rates The cost of materials to construct one smokeless stove = 1250 NRS This includes iron rods, bricks, skilled and unskilled labour Project Implementation costs = 460 NRS Local bank charges to receive funds = 35 NRS This is 10% of the implementation cost for the whole project which will include 10 families. Total Cost of Project = 1,745 Nepalese Rupees *** 10 smokeless stoves are needed for the whole project to get started. This will keep the project implemetation costs down. If you would like to support the costs for more than one smokeless stove, please increase the number in the quantity box below.
