A years running costs for extra-curricular activities club for underprivileged children in rural Nepal

Ref:  14.02

Where is this project needed?

Bihukot, Nepal

Who needs help with this?

Children studying at Amar Secondary school.

How will my support help?

Students at this school have set up this club to provide out of school activities for all the children living in their area. Many of these children are from very poor communities and have never had the chance to take part in extra-curricular activities. Student clubs such as these have been established throughout Nepal and have been an immediate success, providing children from poor communities with the opportunity to take part in extra curricular activities, such as sports, conservation awareness, art competitions, gardening, plus many other activities. The groups are run by the students themselves, giving them the opportunity to manage their own budget, elect their own management board and organise all activities themselves. The management board has asked for contributions from the students to help with running costs, but each student can only afford 10 Rupees (10p) a year. Without help, they cannot afford the facilities to run the programme effectively. Your support with this project will give the 60 elected committee members the chance to provide a years activity program for some of the poorest children in Nepal. Up to 400 children in this area will benefit from the opportunity to take part for the first time in a wide range of activities that will encourage new interests, help build confidence and broaden their experiences.

Cost Breakdown
All items are bought in Nepal; to reduce costs and to support the local economy. All costs are therefore given in Nepalese Rupees. JustAid is currently using an exchange rate of £1 = 120 Nepalese Rupees. This rate is slightly lower than the Banks because it allows for fluctuation in the rates

Running costs for one year = 5000 NRS
Project Implementation costs = 3200 NRS
Local bank charges to receive funds = 350 NRS
Total Cost of Project = 8,550 Nepalese Rupees

"The challenge is to provide the up and coming generation with the awareness, abilities and mental strength they need to take responsibility for their own lives, and to make their contribution to society. This is a true challenge for development." (UNESCO, Senegal Conference, July 2001)
