Running costs for extra-curricular activities in rural school for underprivileged children

Ref:  19.02

Where is this project needed?

Baglung, Nepal

Who needs help with this?

Himalaya Secondary School, Geetanagar, Chitwan, Nepal

How will my support help?

Students at this school have taken the initiative to set up a club to provide out-of-school activities for all the children living in their area. Many of these children are from very poor communities and have never had the chance to take part in extra-curricular activities. Student clubs such as these have been established in many schools throughout Nepal and have been an immediate success, providing children from poor communities with the opportunity to take part in extra curricular activities, such as sports, conservation awareness, art competitions, quiz contests, debating, gardening, plus many other activities. The groups are run by the students themselves, giving them the opportunity to manage their own budget, elect their own management board and organise all activities themselves. The management board has asked for contributions from the students to help with running costs, but each student can only afford a few pence a year. Without help, they cannot afford the facilities to run the programme effectively. Your support with this project will give the elected committee members the opportunity to provide a years activity program for some of the poorest children in Nepal. Up to 400 children studying at the school and living in the surrounding area will benefit from the chance to take part for the first time in a wide range of activities that will encourage new interests, help build confidence and broaden their experiences.

Cost Breakdown
All items are bought in Nepal; to reduce costs and to support the local economy. All costs are therefore given in Nepalese Rupees. JustAid is currently using an exchange rate of £1 = 120 Nepalese Rupees. This rate is slightly lower than the Banks because it allows for fluctuation in the rates

Quiz contest = 3000 NRS
Essay competition = 3000 NRS
Cultural programme = 5000 NRS
Sport = 5000 NRS
Project Implementation costs = 3100 NRS
Local bank charges to receive funds= 350 NRS
The above includes costs involved in buying prizes, refreshment and first aid. There will be quarterly events organized by the club.
Total Cost of Project = 19550 Nepalese Rupees

"The total well being of children should be at the core of education. Children who are both mentally and physically in good shape, and thus healthy and motivated in life, are also likely to learn more and make better use of their learning." (UNESCO, Senegal Conference, July 2001)
