A Computer for a Girls Secondary School in rural Nepal Ref: 32.00 Where is this project needed? Western Nepal, Nepal Who needs help with this? Kalika Girls Secondary School How will my support help? This is the only girls' school in this rural region and is funded by the local community. This is a poor community and the school must run on a very tight budget. They are currently unable to provide access to information technology for the girls. This school educates 500 girls from the region. Literacy rates for females are only 25% in Nepal and participation in secondary school is around 1%. Women are still widely discriminated against and it is believed that the way to overcome this is through improved education. It is essential that girls are given the opportunity of a good education and this must be encouraged wherever possible. Kalika Secondary school is dedicated to promoting education for girls. It is a community school which means that the local community have raised the funds needed to run the school. The school feels it is essential for the girls to have some experience and knowledge of computers and hopes to have 2 computers that the students can use. Working knowledge of computers would be a huge advantage for the girls and would improve their opportunities of finding a job when they leave school. Also, providing I.T. training may act as an incentive for families living in nearby rural areas to send their daughters to the school. Your support with this project will provide access to computer training for 500 girls which will help with their work opportunities in the future. Cost Breakdown All items are bought in Nepal; to reduce costs and to support the local economy. All costs are therefore given in Nepalese Rupees. JustAid is currently using an exchange rate of £1 = 120 Nepalese Rupees.
