A deep well for a rural community-funded primary school Ref: 517.00 Where is this project needed? Dang, Nepal Who needs help with this? Gauri Primary School, Dang How will my support help? This rural school receives no financial support from the goverment, and is funded by the local community. Most of the students are Tharus, one of the most disadvantaged ethnic groups in Nepal, who in the past were used as bonded labour. Today, many Tharus live below the poverty line, and in the poorest rural communities. The 178 students at this school have no access to safe drinking water. At the moment the children have to walk 10 minutes to collect water from a local stream. Water related diseases are a major problem in Nepal, particularly amongst children. Diarrhoea alone is the biggest cause of death of children under the age of five. Your support for this project will provide long term access to safe drinking water for all the children at this school.
