Construction of a playground for primary school children

Ref:  95

Where is this project needed?

Chitwan, Nepal

Who needs help with this?

Shree Rastriya Primary School, Pathihani, Chitwan

How will my support help?

This school was set up to provide the opportunity for children from some of the poorest families in the area to attend school. Many of the students studying here are from the Tharu caste. This is an ethnic group in Nepal and one of the most disadvantaged groups. Many of these families live well below the poverty line and in many cases are homeless. Prior to this school being set up, these families were not able to send their children to school. This school runs on a very tight budget and is in a poor condition, lacking many basic facilities, including a suitable play area. The school is based on a steep slope, which needs levelling in order to create a safe play area.
The children would like to be able to take part in local sports competitions with other schools but at the moment they are not able to practise to a level where they are able to compete. The school have requested the funds needed to level the play area so that the children have access to a proper play area. Your support with this project will help improve the facilities of the school, and thus the general learning environment and the school feel that this will have a positive impact on the children.

Cost Breakdown
All items are bought in Nepal; to reduce costs and to support the local economy. All costs are therefore given in Nepalese Rupees. JustAid is currently using an exchange rate of £1 = 120 Nepalese Rupees. This rate is slightly lower than the Banks because it allows for fluctuation in the rates

Hiring of a JCB digger 10 days x 2000 NRS = 20,000 NRS
Equipment = 5000 NRS
Labour cost = 10,000 NRS
Project Implementation costs = 3100 NRS
Local bank charges to receive funds = 350 NRS
Total Cost of Project = 38,450 Nepalese Rupees

"Education is a fundamental human right. It provides children, youth and adults with the power to reflect, make choices and enjoy a better life. It breaks the cycle of poverty and is a key ingredient in economic and social development." (www.unesco.org)
