Bookshelves for a secondary school library in deprived area

Ref:  96.00

Where is this project needed?

Lalitpur, Nepal

Who needs help with this?

Shree Sisnery secondary school, Lamatar

How will my support help?

This secondary school in Nepal is based in a very poor area. Although it is relatively close to the capital city of Kathmandu, this school has very basic facilities and must run on an extremely tight budget. As a result, the school lacks some of the most basic equipment. There is a very basic library room but the school is unable to afford adequate shelving for the books. This means that it is difficult for students to find books and so they are unable to make full use of the resources. With suitable shelving, a proper filing system can be put in place and the school then intends to introduce a library card system so that students will be able to take books out to study at home. At present, this is not possible because there is no system in place. Your support with this project will allow the school to implement this new system for managing the books, which will greatly improve the access to resources for the students.

Cost Breakdown
All items are bought in Nepal; to reduce costs and to support the local economy. All costs are therefore given in Nepalese Rupees. JustAid is currently using an exchange rate of £1 = 120 Nepalese Rupees. This rate is slightly lower than the Banks because it allows for fluctuation in the rates

1 bookcase cost = 4500 NRS x 4 = 18,000 NRS
Project Implementation costs = 1100 NRS
Local bank charges to receive funds = 350 NRS
Total Cost of Project = 19,450 Nepalese Rupees

"Education is a fundamental human right. It provides children, youth and adults with the power to reflect, make choices and enjoy a better life. It breaks the cycle of poverty and is a key ingredient in economic and social development." (www.unesco.org)
