Drinking water tank for a community run primary school Ref: 56.00 Where is this project needed? Chitwan, Nepal Who needs help with this? Himalaya Secondary School in Chitwan. How will my support help? This school was set up to provide the opportunity for children from some of the poorest families to attend school. There are around 300 children from Himalaya village and many from families from the Tharu caste who are extremely poor and/or homeless. Tharus are one of the most disadvantaged groups in Nepal, often made to work as bonded labourers. They generally have little or no financial independence and in the past were effectively treated as slaves. In 2000, the law in Nepal changed, stating that all bonded labourers must be released and so they are now 'free'. However, on having to leave their employers, these families also had to leave their homes and so were left jobless and homeless with little opportunity to improve their situation. This school is solely for those people who can not afford private education which is expensive. The school currently has only one water pump but this is not sufficient to provide all of the students with drinking water as they only have a 45 minute lunch break. Your support with this project will provide these students with a cemented water tank with ten taps situated around the tank. This will enable all of the children access to safe drinking water throughout their school day. Links>>> This school also needs support with building a toilet block for the students.
